Kamala Harris’s loss in the 2024 presidential election was shocking and tragic for the Desi community in the United States and abroad. Her candidacy, which gained significant traction in a mere one hundred and seven days, resulted in a close but heartbreaking loss. Many Hindu-Americans and Desi communities have asked the question, ‘Can one of us win?’. And the answer, as per the election results, seemed like a resounding no.

I found myself filled with doubt and anger at our system. The nation had elected a convicted felon and power-hungry businessman over a smart, educated, and experienced Indian-American woman. Many others that I spoke to felt the same. Kamala represented the hopes and dreams of many to be seen and represented in government and spaces we’ve historically been excluded from. Her rise in popularity, especially at the beginning of her campaign, was inspiring to many.
One of the most inspiring moments, in which the Desi community felt represented and included, was at the Democratic National Convention this August. The DNC actively promoted inclusion was particularly inspiring, as it highlighted the growing influence of South Asian Americans and the immigrant community’s experiences as a core democratic value. Speeches from Kamala’s sister and friends highlighted the importance of her presence on the presidential ticket– speeches about her mother, how far she’d come, how proud her mother would be of her, and even Indian food created a sense of pride and belonging among many in the Desi community. Desi Democrats around the globe tuned in to the DNC and celebrated the progress in representation for our community.

Kamala’s defeat saddened much of the community, but can also serve as a rallying cry going forward for Desi Americans in U.S. politics. Her loss highlights the importance of perseverance and her concession speech focused on this especially. Harris urged us to continue striving for progress and conceded the election, but not the fight. Young Hindu activists, many of whom were inspired by her journey, now have a roadmap for what’s possible.
Hindu Americans have much to contribute to America’s future and have the power to influence this country’s direction. As we reflect on Kamala Harris’s loss, we ought to keep fighting for change and progress through political activism, community engagement, grassroots organizing, and so much more. Her legacy will continue to motivate the community to break barriers and build a future where diverse voices truly shape America’s path forward, one step at a time.
